The Atlanta BeltLine is a major new transportation corridor with direct connections into downtown and midtown. It boasts the most comprehensive transportation and economic development effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta and among the largest, most wide-ranging urban use, transportation, greenspace, and sustainable growth. It all originated when Georgia Tech graduate student Ryan Gravel in a 1999 master’s thesis proposed linking multiple city neighborhoods with a new transit system along the old Atlanta “Belt Line” rail corridors. His thesis inspired the Atlanta BeltLine and gained immediate interest and citizen as well as government support.
The Atlanta BeltLine utilizes an existing 22-mile historic rail corridor that encircles the City of Atlanta as its foundation. The BeltLine is critical for long-term transportation initiatives in Atlanta. With links to the existing MARTA system and other transit services from outlying suburban communities, the transit component of the Atlanta BeltLine benefits everyone in the entire metro Atlanta region.
Walkable pedestrian friendly rail transit and 33 miles of multi-use trails will follow this corridor and spur off from it. The completion of the Atlanta BeltLine will bring together 45 intown neighborhoods and also link them to the entire metropolitan Atlanta region through a collection of transit systems.
The Atlanta BeltLine evolved from an idea into a robust new vision of an Atlanta dedicated to an integrated approach to connecting the city. Four trail segments are open, as well as six new and renovated park. But, the completion of the project will occur in phases through 2030.
